Wendall Starmer, CMSgt (ret) I'll have to admit, other than fishing for bass, crappie and salmon, I am not what one would consider a great fisherman and I had only caught one walleye in my life and that was by accident. So when Charlie Nelson invited me to Duluth to fish for walleye, I really had no idea what to expect. What I discovered was the same honesty, drive and work ethic Charlie displayed in the desert, was only surpassed by the skill and knowledge that he brings to bear toward walleye fishing. He knows what he is doing and he knows where the fish are. Since we only had two days to fish, Charlie had asked us how we wanted to fish, so we told him we would like to go for numbers on the first day and size on the second day. And, that is exactly what we did. The first day we caught 24, most in the 18 to 19 inch range with 22 inches being the largest. The first fish of the second day was over 26 inches! What was really amazing was that as we were catching these fish, I was noticing that the other boats in our vicinity were not. Or perhaps they were but we were just too busy to notice what anyone else was doing. In any case, Charlie had accomplished what he told us he would do and then some. It was truly exciting to see how professionally Charlie worked those walleye and at the same time made the trip so enjoyable and fun that my brother and I have decided to make this an annual event. I know there are other charter services to select from in Duluth and I am sure that they are well qualified. However, if you are looking to catch walleye, have the most fun of your life and searching for one of those once in a lifetime fishing experiences, you can't do better than fishin' with Charlie. Charlie, thanks for a great time and save some for us for next year. |
