When Walleye fishing you cull several before you get a keeper, it's the same with fishing guides, I've culled several but found a keeper in Charlie Nelson! I highly recommend Nelson's Guide and Charter Service when you're going to be in the Duluth area or if you're looking for a unique fishing experience away from the crowds. I have chartered professional fishermen and professional guides, believe me there is a difference. Most guide services are actually professional fishermen looking to improve their skills while trying out new techniques and lures. At first you would think this would be an ideal situation, but very shortly you figure out you're paying for their experimentation and I guarantee they will not put on the best water; they're saving that for themselves. When you're fishing with Chaz, it's all about you, and when you're paying that's the way it should be. He will allow the experienced angler the freedom to fish the way he's comfortable and only offer advice when asked or if the stretch or water you're on is best fished in a different manner. Charlie might be at his best with kids and younger anglers, his personality is classic Midwest friendly and easy to get along with. He is very encouraging and patient with kids, just ask his daughters! They can out-fish most boys their age and always have fun fishing with dad.

The St. Louis River provides a huge array of fishing opportunities, Charlie just seems to know which stretches are hot and which are not. The last time I fished with Chaz it was early May and my buddy and I were able to boat between 50 and 60 walleye in 4 hour periods. Obviously some days are better than others, but what was unique about the trip was that we were on completely different parts of the river every day. If the bite wasn't good in one place Charlie quickly put us were the fishing was much better! Speaking of quickly, you will enjoy the roominess, speed and ride comfort of his 21' Lund. I had never fished off a tiller boat that large before, the expanse of uncluttered room to fight and land fish is something you will have to experience for yourself.

Professionalism is a big deal to me. I have over 5000 hours of “fighter” time to include the F-16 in 25 years with the Air Force and Air National Guard. You will find Charlie is the consummate professional; he has spent many years on the river and knows it very well. The boat and equipment are first rate and well maintained. Your safety and comfort will never be compromised. If you can't bring your own, he will outfit you with quality fishing equipment as well as rain and safety gear. Call or e-mail ahead and Charlie will provide you with recommendations for hotels and tips on places to eat. The Duluth airport is small but easy to get in and out of during the fishing season. I'm looking forward to my next trip with Chaz, you won't be disappointed!
